Poor to get 'green' light bulbs
Hundreds of poorer households will help ease global warming while enjoying reduced electricity bills under a programme to help them switch to energy-efficient light bulbs. The programme, organised by Greenpeace and the Neighbourhood and Worker's Service Centre, was sponsored by furniture giant Ikea, which pledged to donate 2,000 fluorescent bulbs. However, the centre said the bayonet-style sockets at many public housing flats were incompatible with the energy-efficient bulbs, which usually screw in. The old bulbs use five times more electricity.
