A man was jailed for eight months yesterday for possessing a large amount of child pornography depicting children as young as eight, which a magistrate described as 'depraved and disgusting'.

'When there is a market, the evil will continue to do this to children. Children have to be protected at this young age,' Magistrate Amanda Woodcock told Leung Chun-hei, 22.

Kwun Tong Court heard that 449 files depicting children in sex acts including sadism were found on Leung's computer when police raided his Tseung Kwan O home in April. Leung, who pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography, told police he downloaded the 376 still images and 73 videos 'just for fun' and viewed them himself.

Noting that Leung had not been diagnosed as sexually deviant, Ms Woodcock said the quantity of the material required a jail term, to reflect the gravity of such offences. Starting with a 12-month term for the offence, which carries a maximum of two years, she gave Leung a four-month discount for his guilty plea and previously clean record.

In a letter to the court, Leung expressed remorse and vowed not to do anything immoral again. He said he had acted in ignorance and regretted not deleting the files when he found out what they were.

The court heard earlier that Leung first accessed pornographic material on the internet when he was in Form Four.

He made a one-off purchase from a pornographic website on January 2005 that contained the material in question. He bought a package that he stored on his desktop computer and opened those files 'out of curiosity' without considering the legal consequences, the court heard.
