Local stars on winning form for scholarships

Triathlete Vincci Hui Wai-sum and rock climbing star Angel Wong Ka-yan are two of the 50 athletes to win a Hong Kong Federation of Youth Group Oregon Scientific Sports Training Scholarship.

Both athletes have won numerous sports events throughout Asia.

Among the chosen winners, 11 youths in the elite category will receive a scholarship of up to HK$10,000; while those in the elementary category will be awarded HK$4,000.

Hui, who was a regular runner and swimmer, took part in her first aquathon when she represented her school in Primary Six.

But the now Form Three student from Diocesan Girls' School only tried cycling after joining the Junior Elite team of the Hong Kong Festival of Sports - Sprint Triathlon when she was in Form One.

'It's much more fun doing three sports at the same time. 'Before I tried triathlon, it could get boring only practising my swimming.

'My muscles also get a more balanced workout from the three different sports. I get so much satisfaction when I am able to complete a race.

'The excitement of standing on the winners' podium is the payoff for all hard work and effort throughout the year,' said the budding sports star.

Wong, who has been doing sports and rock climbing for five years, said she was afraid of heights when she first started.

'It's very enjoyable once you overcome the fear.

'Climbing is quite a challenging sport. In competitions, you usually only get one chance to climb, so you need to be physically and mentally fit.'

Both athletes intend to spend their scholarships on developing their sports.

'Triathletes need to spend a lot on three different sports. And bicycles can be quite expensive, so I will spend most of the money on my bike,' said Hui.

Wong prefers to spend on further qualifications.

'I would like to take the Level I Sports Climbing Coach Course. The scholarship will help me to travel to international competitions.'
