Kaze no Stigma (TV and DVD)

It's a battle of the elements in the new anime Kaze no Stigma.

Kaze no Stigma is a Japanese light novel - a novel with manga-style illustrations - series by Takahiro Yamato and illustrated by Hanamaru Nanto.

The anime version is by Gonzo, whose other productions include Afro Samurai, Solty Rei and Pumpkin Scissors.

The protagonist is Kazuma Kannagi. Four years earlier, he was defeated by his cousin Ayano in a battle of En-Jutsu (fire art) to see who would inherit Enraiha, a magical sword.

Kazuma's defeat, plus his lack of talent in En-Jutsu, make him an embarrassment to his parents, so he is told to leave the ancestral home.

Kazuma returns as Kazuma Yagami, a skilled master of Fu-Jutsu, the wind art. Not only is he more powerful than his cousin Ayano, but he has also surpassed his father, the number one En-Jutsu artist in the Kannagi family. He is also a Contractor.

Contractors are Jutsu artists who make a contract with an Elemental Lord - in this case, the Wind Spirit Lord - who increases the Jutsu artist's powers when asked.

Kazuma's return to his hometown causes fear and suspicion among the Kannagi clan who believe he has returned to destroy them. They challenge him to fight, and he easily defeats them.

Ayano is now a hot-headed high school girl. As the successor to the clan, she plans to avenge the family.

However there are bigger things afoot, as dark forces threaten to cause doom and destruction.

This is an exciting anime with a lot of fun, quirky moments, thanks to Ayano's rash and easily wound up character. Kazuma is cool and aloof, with something of a bad boy about him, a trait that will appeal to female otakus.

This is currently only showing on Japanese TV, so watch out for the imminent DVD release.
