Love for athletics runs deep

TWENTY-three records fell at the Pok Oi Hospital Chan Kai Memorial College third annual athletic meet recently.

Red House had more than their fair share of record-breakers, winning the overall championship after grabbing the House titles in boys' Grade A and Grade C and the girls' Grade B.

Yiu Chun-ming grabbed gold medals in triple jump and the 400 metres, and came second in the long jump, securing him the boys' Grade A individual championship.

It was the first time that Chun-ming has won a title despite a long period of participation in the sports day.

The fifth former was delighted with his win and said it was a good way to end his secondary school life and a memory that he would always treasure.

''I don't know if I will have another chance to take part in the school meet, so I put in extra effort to prepare for it this year and hoped for the best,'' said a jubilant Chun-ming.

The sports lover said he liked playing basketball, volleyball, football and swimming, which ''helps to train my body and boost my confidence''.

Although Yellow House's Yuen Kar-ki is not as experienced as Chun-ming in athletics and had only taken part in the school meet once before, her love of sports runs as deep as his.

The Form Two girl became individual champion after winning the 100 m and 200 m races and finishing third in the long jump.

Kar-ki attributed her success to luck. She said her strongest competitor, also her good friend, was ill and withdrew from the meet.

''Last year she beat me. This year I had practised more and wanted to compete with her again. It is a pity that I did not have the opportunity,'' she said.

Red House's Ku Hoi-yan said her confidence was boosted by taking the individual championship for the girls' Grade B. She also came first in the 400 m, second in high jump and third in the 800 m.

The sports day not only saw keen competition among athletes, but also the cheering team members.

Girls, sporting short skirts in their team colours, danced and cheered for their House mates.

Colourful umbrellas, fans, ribbons and hats were used to convey their support to competitors. The best cheering team award went to Blue House.
