Learn to appreciate others and work together

I am finding school difficult, but it is not the material covered in class that's tricky, it is my relationship with my classmates.

Before Form Six, I only had to focus on my results, but now we have to work with other people in different associations and clubs.

We are expected to be sociable, but I've found that everyone is hypocritical. I don't know if they're telling me the truth or not. People smile at you one moment and criticise you behind your back the next.

I can't accept this behaviour. Is this the only way to survive in a competitive world? I'm afraid that I will become like them one day.

TSE CHUN-WAI

Thanks for your letter, Chun-wai. Working in a team can come as a shock, especially if you're used to do everything by yourself. But it is good training - chances are that you will almost certainly have to work with other people in your future job.

There will always be some people who are two-faced. The best way of dealing with this is to do your best not to be part of it. It might take some self-restraint, but even if someone bad-mouths you, do your best not to get involved and start bad-mouthing them.

My advice is to focus on the strengths of the people in your team, and not on their weaknesses. You will find that everyone has something to contribute.
