Don't become a victim of your hiking trail fashion statement

It's one of life's great mysteries why so many Hongkongers choose the hottest days to barbecue at beaches and hike in country parks.

Perhaps the summer is just not hot enough for them. I suppose it's too bad that we don't have deserts here.

To cut down on the number of heatstroke incidents involving hikers, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department and former legislator Lo Wing-lok have teamed up to promote sensible hiking, which may be something of an oxymoron for many people here.

'This is not to alarm you,' said Dr Lo, who is coincidentally also a member of the Hong Kong Toilet Association. 'All I want to do is tell you how to safely enjoy hiking.

' I've seen some hikers dressed in jeans and sandals, carrying maybe one bottle of water and a newspaper.

'Ill-preparation can be harmful.'

Here are some of their safety tips:

Try half an hour of exercise per day for three days a week, and start with beginner trails, such as The Peak.

High temperature and high humidity can cause heatstroke, so check the weather.

Take lots of water to drink, and a mobile phone.

And try not to wear tight jeans and dark clothes, and other fashion accessories. No fashion statement, in other words.
