Even before a ball is kicked in the Barclays Asia Trophy at Hong Kong Stadium, diehard Liverpool fans are confident their team will emerge as champions.

The Liverpool soccer squad, which arrives in Hong Kong today, includes several of the game's big names, such as Spanish golden boy Fernando Torres and Holland's rising star Ryan Babel, who joined from Ajax. And of course, there will be Steven Gerrard, the team's captain.

'Our team will win the tournament. No doubt about it,' said Dave Oh of the Hong Kong Liverpool Supporters' Club. 'We will trash local FA Cup champions South China 5-0.'

Playing in the knockout trophy, the Reds will face the Caroliners in the first match on Tuesday, then fellow English Premiership clubs Portsmouth and Fulham will take each other on.

'The next game will be a bit difficult, but we will still be able to beat Portsmouth or Fulham 3-1,' Mr Oh said.

The final and a playoff for third place will be held on Friday. Tickets for all the matches at the 40,000-seat stadium are sold out.

'We will take seats in the south stand and we will have a party there,' said Mr Oh, adding that the fans hoped to get close to the players.

He has been a fan of the Reds since childhood. 'I lived in London, and I tried my best to watch them play as often as possible,' he said. He added that he missed the atmosphere of the big stadiums.

Every week, members of the fan club gather at a restaurant in Lockhart Road, Wan Chai, to watch live coverage of the English Premier League. 'Our football fan club is one big family. We support the team with all of our hearts,' he said.

The fan club said new members were welcome and anyone interested could visit its website at

'The current team is much better than the one which came to Hong Kong in 2003. We have the right players in the right places and we have Rafael Benitez as coach,' Mr Oh said.
