Two mainland cultural celebrities took their Hong Kong audience by storm yesterday with their interpretations of Chinese literary and historical classics.

In their first direct dialogue, Yu Dan, 41, a Beijing Normal University media professor, and Yi Zhongtian, 60, a Xiamen University history professor, jousted about ancient wisdoms from the Analects of Confucius and the Three Kingdoms era in front of a full house in City Hall.

The scholars enjoy rock-star status on the mainland and are sought-after speakers. They shot to fame after publishing books based on transcripts of lectures on CCTV. Professor Yu's Notes on Reading the Analects has sold more than four million copies in four months. Savouring the Three Kingdoms by Professor Yi has sold about 700,000 copies since July.
