Cathay Pacific's policy is to attract the brightest and the best

Swire Group

I wish to put into context some of the comments made in various letters on our employment policies.

Cathay Pacific is one of Hong Kong's largest employers - with 11,400 of our 16,400 employees worldwide based in Hong Kong. We carry more than one million people to and through Hong Kong every month.

We are a multicultural company, employing people of many nationalities from many different countries in a wide variety of jobs, many of them highly skilled and specialised.

We operate in an extremely competitive environment where those with the skills and qualifications we need are in strong and growing demand. Like our competitors, we tailor our employment policies to meet these demands and requirements.

Our policy is to attract the best and brightest talent available.

Our salaries in Hong Kong are the same for staff wherever they come from. Like other large employers, however, we have to make it worthwhile for people with the skills we need to come to Hong Kong, by assisting them with housing costs, for example.

Cathay Pacific has worked assiduously to develop Hong Kong as the premier aviation hub in the Asia Pacific region.

Our bold growth and expansion plans in both passenger and cargo business are aimed at cementing that position, and our total investment of more than US$1 billion at the airport makes Cathay Pacific easily the largest private investor in the project and underscores our belief in the future of aviation in Hong Kong.

In the 60 years we have been operating out of Hong Kong, we have consistently invested in this city, its people and community.

We take our responsibilities to the community as seriously as we take our responsibilities to our staff and shareholders.

We are committed to the growth and future prosperity of our company and community over the decades to come.

Dane Cheng, general manager, corporate communication, Cathay Pacific Airways
