Nearly 60 per cent of calls made to the 999 centre in the first half of the year had been nuisance calls or from people who had dialled the wrong number, police statistics show. The call centre dealt with 1,108,035 calls between January and June, or 6,121 a day. Of the total, only 462,545, or 42 per cent, were genuine. The rest were 'nuisance' or 'misdialled calls', according to figures released yesterday. A police spokesman urged people not to misuse the 999 hotline.
