Success at film festival
A local university student won the Distinguished Documentary Award in the annual Reel Ideas Studio Community Documentary Competition during the 2007 Cannes Film Festival in May.
Liu Wai-lan, 24, is a Year Two student at City University of Hong Kong majoring in creative media. She flew to Cannes with 39 other students from around the world to participate in the competition.
During the 16-day trip, Ms Liu and her three teammates produced a short documentary called Les Lumieres Brillantes (Moths to the Fame) about the work of a lighting control supervisor in Cannes.
It was selected by the studio as one of the three most outstanding works.
'We chose this topic because light represents glory and brilliance. The filming process was surprisingly smooth because the worker was extremely friendly,' said Ms Liu, who felt at home in Cannes as she speaks fluent French.
Ms Liu was the only Asian participant.
'It was the first time that I worked with foreign students. It was interesting and I've learned about different cultures.'
Reel Ideas Studio is jointly sponsored by Adobe, Intel and the Vancouver Film School.
Since 2006, they have sent students to the Cannes Film Festival to learn from and gain experience at this international event.
