Pick your travel agents carefully, mainland visitors urged
The Travel Industry Council yesterday urged visitors from the mainland to be careful when selecting travel agents. The advice was issued after a group of mainland dancers travelling to Hong Kong for a contest were stranded in Shenzhen for 12 hours because of a row over fees with their travel agency. The 570-member group was expected to leave for Macau today. The council's executive director, Joseph Tung Yao-chung, said the dispute, which involved a Shenzhen agency, had apparently been resolved. There was little the council could do except urge travellers to choose reputable travel agents.
Man wanders onto MTR track
MTR services were suspended for several minutes after an elderly man walked onto the tracks at Heng Fa Chuen station. Police said the 81-year-old had earlier caught the wrong train and began walking down the track at about 4.10pm. He was led to safety by MTR staff. Police gave him a warning for breaking railway bylaws.
Diver bitten by blowfish
An off-duty fireman needed hospital treatment after being bitten by a blowfish while diving. The 50-year-old said the 30cm fish attacked him as he was trying to unhook it while diving and fishing with a friend in the sea off Lamma. Marine police brought him ashore and he was taken to hospital. He was discharged after treatment.
Motorcyclist killed
A motorcyclist died after crashing near Shek Kong. Police said the 33-year-old was riding along Route Twisk towards Pat Heung at about 6.40pm when he lost control near Shek Kong village. He fell into a catchwater and suffered severe wounds. He was confirmed dead in hospital.
Two policemen hurt in assault
Two police officers were allegedly assaulted by a drunk man while trying to give him a ticket for illegally parking in Wellington Street, Central, at about 4am. Police said the 24-year-old man barged into one of the officers then tried to flee with friends in a car. The officers managed to stop and arrest him. The two suffered minor injuries.
