Wolfensohn among top bankers at finance forum

Former World Bank president James Wolfensohn and 600 financial experts from around the world will attend the inaugural Asian Financial Forum in Hong Kong next month.

The forum is the brainchild of Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, who sees it as an important step to reinforce Hong Kong's prestige as an international financial centre.

'Leverage New Opportunities, Advancing Regional Stability' will be the topic of the one-day forum at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai on September 21.

The keynote speakers will be Mr Wolfensohn, chairman of the International Advisory Board of Citigroup; Jaime Caruana, counsellor of the International Monetary Fund and a former governor of the Bank of Spain; and Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of the People's Bank of China.

Mr Tsang floated the idea of the forum in his policy address last October, and it is one of the major official events celebrating the 10th anniversary of the handover. The government and the Trade Development Council are co-organisers.

The chief executive will deliver a speech when he opens the forum, while Financial Secretary John Tsang Chun-wah will speak at the forum lunch. However, it is not clear whether Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Chan Ka-keung will be a convenor.

A spokesman for the Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau said the forum's programmes had not yet been confirmed but said Professor Chan was an adviser on co-ordinating and organising the event.

There will be a plenary session in the morning and three panel sessions in the afternoon focusing on asset and wealth management, development of Asian treasury and bond markets and corporate fundraising options.
