Where? Younik is on Shanghai's Bund, a one-time colonial settlement turned tourist destination. Bund 18 is a chic historical building that was once the headquarters of the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China. It now houses various shops and commercial ventures.

Who? Younik is Shanghai's first and only multibrand store stocking high-end designs from local designers. It's run by Julie Zhu, manager of the retail department of Bund 18, but what's stocked inside is the result of a collaborative effort with featured designers. 'Younik is a stage where personality designers can fully show their works,' says Kray Lu, a retail department assistant. 'According to the designers' ideas, we'll decorate our shop windows every one to three months.'

Fashion finds: Younik loves its native sons and daughters. Look for pieces by Shanghai haute couture designer Lu Kun and Hong Kong-trained designer Jenny Ji (who often works with cashmere and embroidered fabrics from minority producers in Yunnan and Guizhou provinces), and more experimental fashion from Zhang Da and Cheng Ping. If you want Chinese-inspired accessories, try Shanghai Trio.

The vibe: elegant, and then some. It's a classy place but not as upmarket as its neighbours (which include Patek Philippe, Cartier and Emperor). It has an old Shanghai feel, while the clothes inject a modern, fresh note.

The crowd: society ladies and destination shoppers/tourists with money to spend.

Extras: if you're craving a caffeine boost, order tea and coffee from the boutique cafe. Employees will bring it to you while you shop.

Younik is at 2/F, Bund 18, 18 Zhongshan Dongyi Lu (by Najing Donglu), Huangpu, Shanghai, tel: 86 21 6323 8688.
