Transformers: soundtrack in disguise

Like the Autobots and Decepticons, the Transformers: The Movie soundtrack is cleverly disguised.

About a third of the songs on the album do not feature during the movie, making this a compilation of alternative rock songs from big name bands and a few up-and-comers rather than a reminder of the plot.

The first two thirds of the album is a wonderful collection of new alternative rock songs such as Smashing Pumpkins' Doomsday Clock, Disturbed's hard-rocking This Moment and The Used's Pretty Handsome Awkward. Linkin Park's Halloween-like intro for What I've Done makes for a great opening track.

The Goo Goo Doll's rock ballad Before It's Too Late (Sam and Mikaela's Theme) is a highlight. It offers a quiet spell in this heavy rock-laden album. The song starts with a mellow guitar intro and soft drum accompaniment that builds to become a strong chorus, modulating back again to the softer and more melancholy verse.

What is disappointing is the lack of any electronic or hip hop tracks. One addition that would have made this soundtrack complete would have been either Lion's or Stan Bush's version of the Transformers theme song from the 1980s.
