Bus driver held over HK$2.7m haul of silver bars, phone parts

Customs officers seized silver bars and mobile phone parts worth HK$2.7 million at Lok Ma Chau checkpoint. Officers intercepted a bus heading for the mainland on Saturday during a routine inspection and found 35 silver bars weighing about 525kg. Seven cartons of mobile phone parts were also found. The silver bars were hidden next to the driver's seat and behind the last row of the passenger seats, while the mobile phone parts were found inside the battery cubicle next to the luggage compartment. A 34-year-old driver was arrested. Under the Import and Export Ordinance, the maximum penalty for attempting to export undeclared cargo from Hong Kong is a fine of HK$2 million and seven years' jail.

Woman hurt in flat fire

A 38-year-old woman suffered burns to her face and limbs in a fire in a flat at Vista Paradiso, Ma On Shan, shortly before 1am. Firefighters said an initial investigation revealed the accident was caused by a gas leak in the kitchen. About 40 residents were evacuated from a residential building. The woman was admitted to Prince of Wales Hospital.

Pedestrian, 79, hit by bus

Police are investigating an accident in which a woman, 79, was seriously injured when she was knocked down by a bus in Sha Kok Street, Sha Tin. The woman is in Prince of Wales Hospital in critical condition. Police appeal to anyone who witnessed the accident to contact them at 3661 1300 or 2490 5581.

Three fall ill after meal

Three women, aged from 24 to 76, became ill after eating pumpkin bread at a flat in Lung Fung Garden in Sheung Shui and they were admitted to North District Hospital for suspected food poisoning at about 2pm. Paramedics collected samples from the bread for further testing and examination.

Injured hiker airlifted

A 56-year-old man was airlifted to Eastern Hospital by the Government Flying Services after he fell into a stream when hiking at Hok Tau in Fanling. A spokeswoman for the Government Information Service said a request for help was received at about 11.25am. The man was in serious condition.
