Mingle and look for suitable friends

There's a saying that goes: 'Youth is a blunder, adulthood a struggle, old age a regret.'

It is common for young people to make mistakes because they may make wrong judgments and befriend the wrong people.

Many of today's teenagers don't understand what the true meaning of friendship.

True friendship involves giving and taking. Good friends encourage each other to strive for their goals, such as getting good grades in examinations.

If we make the wrong friends, we may easily go astray as we follow what they do. So take caution when you make friends.

CHAN SHUN-WA

Ju Ching Chu Secondary School (Kwai Chung) Thanks for your letter, Shun-wa. I sometimes think of friendships at school and university as trying on clothes. Every school or college has a whole wardrobe full of different outfits - or students who are potential friends.

We might choose to spend time with one friend or gang for a while, almost as if we're trying them on to see if they suit us. There will be some friends who fit perfectly - your views and interests work in harmony with theirs. And there will be other friends who don't suit you as much.

Just as you spend time choosing what to wear for an important event, we need to spend time thinking about our friends. And just as we grow out of some clothes, we can grow out of friendships. Don't be afraid of change.
