Praise fails to soothe China's ire

THE prestigious awards given to the film Farewell My Concubine, among them the Palme D'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and now the Golden Globe for best foreign language film, apparently have done nothing to soothe the ire of the Chinese Government.

The Communist Party's official magazine, Seeking Truth, blasted director Chen Kaige's 1993 epic for advocating homosexuality and praising the communists' enemies.

''Today we are building the socialist ethics, can we parade and sell spiritual garbage to general audiences and the broad masses?'' it said.
