Look out for story on Queen's Pier activists
Live broadcasts of the chaotic scene at Queen's Pier occupied the TV screen all day on August 1. Two hundred policemen surrounded the pier, and fire services staff and an abseiling team were called in to get the protesters off the roof.
Queen's Pier has its value as a part of Hong Kong history, and many have fond memories of it.
The Central reclamation project was begun 10 years ago, and is now in its final stage. It is unreasonable to ask the government to halt the plan. If the consultation had been done better 10 years ago, those radical protesters would have been able to voice their opinions then. This is a lesson for the officials.

YP reporter Lau Kit-wai has interviewed three local artists who have turned to social activism to help preserve the city's heritage. All three were deeply involved in the Queen's Pier protests.
I'm proud to see young people taking such a vested interest in Hong Kong's heritage. It shows a real pride in and respect for our city. So much has changed in the last 15 years. In the early 1990s, people were thinking about how they could leave Hong Kong. Now people recognise that Hong Kong is their home - and want to protect the things that make it unique.
