Only three games into the Premiership season, and already the panic button has been pressed at White Hart Lane.
Alarm bells are ringing at Bolton too, and to a lesser extent around Old Trafford after Manchester United's derby defeat last weekend. Derby and Birmingham, meanwhile, are preparing for a relegation six-pointer this weekend - and we are not even out of August.
History can tell us whether some of the judgments being made at this early stage are rash, or founded on solid ground. For instance, take Manchester United's position (two points after three games, with a five-point deficit on main rivals Chelsea) - does that mean they have blown their title chances already? Of course, it is early days, but United have got themselves into a hole.
No Premiership champions in the past 10 seasons have had fewer than five points after three games and since Arsenal's 'Invincibles' stretched the finishing line to 90 points in 2003/04, the last four champions have all had maximum points after three games.
The only team to make a 100 per cent start this season are Manchester City, so what are their prospects? There is limited evidence available, with only two teams from outside England's Big Four having taken maximum points from their first three games in the past 10 seasons, but the indications are that we shouldn't get too carried away. Charlton, in 2005/06, went on to finish 13th after starting with three wins and Bolton (2001/02) ended 16th.
Bolton have had the opposite start this season, with three defeats, so does that mean they are doomed? In the last 10 seasons, nine Premiership teams have started with three defeats, yet only three have been relegated at the end of the season.
The encouraging aspect for Bolton is that the six teams that survived had all been in the Premiership the previous season, while the three relegated teams were newcomers.
And what of Derby and Birmingham, who are already in the bottom three so soon after promotion? The news for them is not good. In the last 10 seasons, six promoted teams have been in the bottom three after three games and all six have ended up being relegated. It seems, then, we should reserve judgment on Manchester City and Bolton, for a few games at least. As for Derby and Birmingham, we can already regard them as teams likely to go down, and bet against them accordingly.
Away from the madness of the Premiership, Spain and Italy kick off this weekend. It promises to be an exciting season in Spain's Primera Liga, which has gained two of the most exciting stars from the Premiership, with Thierry Henry joining Barcelona and Arjen Robben moving to Real Madrid. Barcelona are fancied to regain their title and Valencia could push them hardest this season. Both teams should start with wins this weekend, with Barcelona a good bet on the handicap.
