Birthday No 2 for Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum might have outgrown its venue at Stanley but that doesn't seem to have stemmed the flow of visitors to the cosy venue at the bottom of Murray House.

Amid talk of the museum becoming homeless once the lease expires in August 2010, as well as Shanghai's National Maritime Museum's bold bid to poach its collection, the museum will celebrate its second birthday next month with its 100,000th visitor.

Museum director Stephen Davies (below) says a senior government figure has assured him the museum ranks near the top of museums in visitor numbers.

'It's hard to do the mathematics to compare museums but we are doing well,' Mr Davies says. 'Especially considering everyone who comes through the doors here pays for tickets.'

Everyone, that is, except for the lucky 100,000th visitor, who is expected to walk through the door on September 8. That person will be given a pass for free admission for the entire family as well as the museum's Dynasties and Destinations book and a T-shirt.
