Oasis Hong Kong Airlines has pledged not to charge passengers for check-in services, luggage handling or on-board meals.

'We are not that type of airline,' chief executive Stephen Miller said. 'These sorts of charges can work on a short-haul flight. But not on long-haul. We are looking to provide what the passenger wants.

'He or she wants the essentials - you have to book and you have to carry luggage in economy class. And we give the passenger to London two hot meals and in-flight entertainment.

'It is just not practicable to have long-haul travel without providing people with food and entertainment but I believe that you can also give them a price which is affordable.'

However, alcohol was not essential for economy class passengers, he said.
