Boy dies after choking on fish ball noodles

A 16-year-old boy choked to death on a dish of dace fish balls and instant noodles yesterday. The mentally handicapped youngster was eating with his father at their home in Wo Che Estate, Sha Tin. His father said he had been eating too fast. The boy was taken to the Prince of Wales Hospital, where he was declared dead. An 88-year-old man also choked to death while eating tofu at his home in Ma On Shan. He had bought it from shop near his home in Kam Yung House, Kam Fung Court. He was declared dead just after arriving at hospital.

European lawmakers slam HK environmental policies

A visiting European lobby group criticised the government's approach to protecting the environment and claimed the green paper on constitutional development was used to confuse the public. Members of The Greens-European Free Alliance - an alliance of lawmakers from the European Parliament which advocates human rights and environmental protection - said that despite acknowledging air pollution was a serious problem, there was a lack of clear goals to eliminate it.

Karaoke worker beaten by colleagues in work dispute

A 32-year-old karaoke worker was taken to hospital after being punched in the head during a street brawl with two female colleagues in Yau Ma Tei. Police arrested a 44-year-old woman in Nathan Road at 1am yesterday and gave her a verbal warning before releasing her. Police said the dispute was over problems at work. The attacker and a third colleague, who fled before police arrived, had punched the victim during the dispute. She was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, treated and discharged.

Fewer food poisoning cases seen

The number of food poisoning cases has fallen so far the year despite a rising trend over the past three years, a consultant to the Centre for Food Safety said. Ho Yuk-yin said on a radio show that he would like to see a mandatory registration system for imported food to replace the voluntary programme.

Olympic delegation in Qingdao

A delegation from Hong Kong has flown to Qingdao to swap notes on preparations for the 2008 Olympics. The group was led by Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs Carrie Yau Tsang Ka-lai. Qingdao will host the sailing regatta.

TVB fined over wrongful hiring

TVB and TVB Pay Vision have each been fined HK$50,000 for employing chief officers who were 'disqualified persons' under the Broadcasting Ordinance without permission of the chief executive. Donald Tsang Yam-kuen granted requests on June 27 from the broadcasters for exemption of George Chan Ching-cheong and Jackey Chan Shek-nin from the disqualified persons provisions but rejected requests for backdated approval.
