Outtakes

Sax appeal

SoHo music bar/restaurant Le Rideau has quietly established itself as one of the city's leading venues for more cerebral gigs. After recent shows by New York guitarist Mordy Ferber and Togolese songster Thierry Nkeli Faha come two performances by soprano saxophonist and composer Joe Rosenberg.

American Rosenberg is a 1995 recipient of US National Endowment for the Arts, and has studied with jazz figures including Joe Viola, Buddy Collette and clarinettist John Carter.

Now based in Asia, Rosenberg regularly collaborates with musicians from Paris, New York and San Francisco. His Joe Rosenberg Quartet East comprises players who share his vision of exploratory improvisation and consists of Kobe pianist Masako Hamamura, Hong Kong bassist Peter Scherr and Indonesian percussionist Sri Aksan Sjuman.

Rosenberg's September 7-8 shows at Le Rideau ( 1/F Hilltop Plaza, 49 Hollywood Rd)- start at 9.30pm and entrance at the door is HK$120.

Under the influence

Hindi music, Joy Division, Radiohead and Sonic Youth may not sound like obvious influences for a drum'n'bass artist, but British DJ/producer Amit has always approached his craft from a different angle.

Producing tracks described as 'fascist tribal dub with a warm eastern/gothic twist', Amit has stood out from his peers in the uptempo genre by slowing down beats and bottoming-out bass on tracks released on labels including Commercial Suicide, Metalheadz and Function. As well as DJ-ing and producing, Amit also teaches music technology and mentors new artists from disadvantaged backgrounds, imparting musical knowledge and nurturing the drum'n'bass artists of tomorrow.

This Saturday local drum'n'bass collective Kongkretebass will present a live PA showcase by Amit, where he will show off his muscle by performing live, on-the-fly remixes of his deep, dub-influenced sound.

The Yellow Devil gig (3F, 21 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central) starts at 10pm. Entry is HK$140 at the door.

Musique a la maison

Artists from France have had a considerable impact on house music over the years and most of the biggest have links to one man: DJ Yellow. In 1993, the man born Alain Ho and Bob Sinclair founded the label Yellow Productions, which took on Gallic artists as Dimitri From Paris, Kid Loco, Bang Bang and Joe Claussel, who have all made important contributions to shaping the French sound.

Central venue Drop will celebrate DJ Yellow's career with a performance by the man himself from 11pm on September 13. Entry to the club (B/F On Lok Mansion, 39-43 Hollywood Rd, Central) is free for members and HK$100 for non-members.
