Three charged for chopping activist

Police in Chengdu , Sichuan province , have charged three men over a vicious attack on a 62-year old woman who was representing inner-city residents demanding better relocation compensation.

Liu Chongyou , who had lived in Maan village in Chengdu's Jinniu district for more than half a century, was chopped by thugs sent by a developer early this year.

She suffered severe injuries to her left hand and right leg.

Wu Jianping , deputy general manager of the developer, hired four thugs for 2,000 yuan and bought them knives.

The thugs were taught how to recognise Ms Liu and attacked her on January 15, breaking her leg in three places, according to an indictment issued by the Chengdu Public Security Bureau.

Ms Liu said her only recollection of the attack, which took place on a street in the city centre, was one of her assailants saying: 'You haven't moved away.'

'I would rather die than go on living like this,' Ms Liu said yesterday. 'My left palm can feel neither temperature nor touch; the only sense is pain.'

She said she could move around only in a wheelchair and was very depressed.

After the attack, the thugs intimidated locals, saying they would chop or even kill someone else if they did not agree to move, Ms Liu said.

Wu and the fourth attacker were on the run.
