The mainland's achievements in information technology and sports impressed a group of Hong Kong students during their visit to Shanghai recently.

A total of 40 students, including some from Shanghai, took part in the five-day camp. Apart from sharing their thoughts on technology, the participants visited several hi-tech and sports centres in and around the city.

Fung Pui-shan of Christian Alliance College said she was impressed by the mainlanders' thirst for new knowledge and their resourcefulness.

'They put a lot into hi-tech development,' Pui-shan observed.

'The sprawling technology centre we visited is filled with state-of-the-art facilities.

'Their achievements in  technology can rival those of Hong Kong.'

The itinerary also included visits to sports training centres. With the country in the grip of Olympic fever ahead of the 2008 Games in Beijing,  the organisers of the camp felt the visitors would appreciate a behind-the-scenes glimpse of  top athletes in training.

The students visited several Olympic training centres in Shanghai,    including the stadium where champion hurdler Liu Xiang hones his skills.

They even put on running shoes and ran a few rounds to get a feel for life in the fast lane of Olympics training.

The Chinese athletes' rigorous training methods left a strong impression on the visitors.

Anson Lui of Tin Shui Wai Government Secondary School was particularly impressed by the child gymnasts.

'At one venue we saw gymnasts and martial arts athletes training. I was impressed by the children's acrobatic moves and their strong physique. Some of them are less than 10 years old,' she said.

Anson said she realised that athletes had to work hard and make a lot of sacrifices in order to succeed in sports.

'Behind the glory and the applause lie years of back-breaking work,' Anson said.

'They've been training from a very young age. They only get to go home a few times a year.

'All that intensive training  means they don't have the chance to study at a normal school.

'I was deeply moved by their endurance and determination.'

The  camp was organised by the Hong Kong Computer Society, the Shanghai Computer Society, and the China Welfare Institute Children's Palace.
