Travel magazine has arrived, says flamboyant boss

Five hundred days is hardly a milestone but travel magazine Escape threw a party at Lan Kwai Fong's Q Club on Wednesday for what amounts to a year-and-a-half anniversary party.

Editor-in-chief Peter Guy was certainly in a celebratory mood. Wearing what looked like a smoking jacket turned inside out - red floral and gold prints - the chatty Guy (right) soaked up the success of his monthly hitting its target circulation of 35,000 copies.

'The responses we have received from our readers and media partners have been really enthusiastic and we are starting to get people reading it from other countries since it is available in-flight,' Guy gushed.

'Oh yeah, travel drives every part of my life and you have to like travel if you want to be part of a travel magazine.' Actually, he also envisions himself as something of a self-styled adventurer and raconteur.

The former investment banker will also host a talk on Monday at the Foreign Correspondents' Club to discuss his other pursuits as a pulp fiction author.

'It's a crime novel about a bunch of people on the West Coast who get in over their heads and they are kind of travelling too. Writing is something that I really enjoy and really get into.

'I have been writing and doing research on this novel on and off for about a year and a half.'

The talk is organised by the Women in Publishing Society, on Monday at 6.30pm, HK$80 for FCC members and HK$160 for non-members.
