Mainland student disappears on way back to HK university
A 21-year-old student from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has been missing for more than a week after leaving his mainland home to return for the new school year.
Yin Riqiang called his family from Shenzhen on Wednesday morning last week and said everything was fine. They have not heard from him since.
They do not know if he has had an accident or has cut off contact after an argument at home over his university results.
His father, Yin Xiangyuan, said: 'We exchanged a few words because his academic results were not as good as before. He used to get a full scholarship but only received a partial one this year.'
Mr Yin reported the case to Shenzhen police last night.
'Maybe he is not happy about it. But if he can listen to me now, I want to tell him that everything is fine. We all support him.'
The third-year physics student said goodbye to his parents on Tuesday last week at their home in Liu Yang city, Changsha , in Hunan , where he had spent the summer holidays.
With a schoolmate from the same city, Xia Pengye, he took an overnight train to Shenzhen and planned to cross into Hong Kong the next day. He told Mr Xia to go on ahead, saying he needed to buy some daily necessities before leaving, but he never showed up in Hong Kong.
Mr Xia notified the university and Mr Yin's family on Sunday night.
The family said police had been helpful. Officers from their home town had gone to Shenzhen with a computer that Mr Yin had used at home to check for clues to his whereabouts.
Shenzhen police were also reviewing videotapes taken from CCTV cameras around the Lo Wu border.
The university said yesterday it had contacted the family and Shenzhen police to see if it could help.
The Hong Kong Immigration Department said it had not received any calls for assistance and privacy concerns meant it could not say if the student had crossed the border or not.
Hong Kong police also said they had not received any calls for help.
