NEW Zealand Insurance Life (Bermuda) has countered claims that insurance agents will be disbarred from selling life insurance in Hong Kong under an industry code, in the event they are sacked by their employer.

The group, believed to be interested in recruiting insurance agents locally, said last night: ''We believe this interpretation of the code [on insurance agent practice] is incorrect.'' NZI called on the territory's insurance industry body, the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers, to clarify the point. NZI said it supported the federation and the code.

''We invite the federation to comment on the accuracy of the above interpretation of the code and trust the press will give that interpretation the coverage it deserves,'' said NZI.

National Mutual has terminated the agencies of agents who have allegedly broken company rules.
