Fayuan Temple is one of Beijing's oldest
It was built in the early Tang dynasty (618-907)
Built in a simple but graceful architectural style, with light-grey tiles and deep-red walls
Contains features from Ming and Qing dynasties, during which the temple was renovated several times
Temple hosts Buddhist Academy of China in one of its yards
It has become more widely known and visited since Taiwanese writer Li Ao published a long novel based on its history, Beijing Fayuan Temple, in 1991. The book was nominated for the Nobel Literature Prize in 2000
