Jumbo Kingdom is still around and it's set for celebrations
After Queen's Pier and the King Yin Lei mansion fiasco, at least there is one historic monument in Aberdeen well preserved and celebrated.
The Jumbo Kingdom floating restaurant is preparing a series of charity fund-raising activities for its 30th anniversary, starting with this Sunday's dim sum.
A press conference was held last week to announce the details as about 30 different dishes will be offered at discount between HK$10 to HK$20, with all proceeds from the day going to The Community Chest. In addition, a photo exhibition of the Jumbo's 30-year history will be displayed for all taking a boat trip down memory lane.
'We are also selling special souvenirs, a limited edition 1970s design watch collection on Sunday,' general manager Henry Yeung (pictured) revealed.
'Lawrence Ho Yau-lung [son of casino tycoon Stanley Ho Hung-sun] took over the Jumbo Kingdom in 2002 and spent close to HK$30 million renovating it, adding the Top Deck and its western food outlet. By the way, young Mr Ho happens to be the exact same age as the Jumbo.'
However, the question patrons most often ask about the Jumbo is not about its ownership, but whether it's seaworthy?
'Lots of people have asked this - can the floating restaurant actually sail? Well, no, the boat has no engine or power to go anywhere.'
