Someone with a positive attitude who is looking to move across the border should consider this position at The Janel Group of Hong Kong. The logistics firm needs a branch manager to spearhead operations in the Shenzhen office.

'This is an important role as China is one of the key areas of the company's business focus,' said director Teresa Tsui.

The degree holder in logistics, business management or related disciplines will be expected to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Shenzhen office to help achieve the company's business goals. The job is dynamic, so someone with a wide range of managerial skills would be ideal.

'It is not a mundane job, and would suit someone who enjoys work with multiple roles involving different functional departments such as operations, finance and sales and marketing,' she said.

The proactive, self-driven and results oriented person will maintain and develop air and ocean carriers, maintain co-loaders relationships, develop and implement sales strategies as well as manage and supervise staff to ensure daily operation efficiency.

Part of the duties as branch manager will also be identifying and evaluating business development opportunities in the market to increase market penetration.

Ms Tsui said that this would be the challenge. 'The incumbent would need to deal with the continuously changing business and regulatory environment in China.' But she added the ability to manage this role effectively both internally and externally would bring a lot of job satisfaction.

Working in the mainland was a double-edged sword, Ms Tsui said. There would be a lot of satisfaction 'derived from effectively managing a business operation in China and that could be very rewarding, especially if it was achieved through a strong and high spirited team', she said. But the candidate would also have to work within the frameworks of a fluid labour market in Shenzhen.

Candidates must have eight to 10 years of experience in freight forwarding, three of which should be at a managerial level. Someone with effective interpersonal, presentation and negotiation skills was sought to keep the company's emphasis on 'providing personal services and effective solutions to customers', she said.

The candidate must also have a positive attitude and be happy to tackle the challenges of working in China and getting along with people on all levels. There will be occasional travel to South China cities and around Hong Kong to visit existing and potential customers.

Certified under the ISO 9001:2000, The Janel Group has provided transport and logistics services for more than 30 years and is also a full-service US customs broker.

The Hong Kong office operates as a third-party logistics provider. The company won the Hong Kong Trade Development Council's Logistics Award Hong Kong 2007.
