You've heard how some Hong Kong pet owners are absolutely bonkers about their animals, treating them like they are their own children. A reader wrote in, swearing that what he witnessed in a Chinese teahouse in Happy Valley early this week was absolutely true.

A woman customer had a puppy with her and had to share her table with another couple, he said. The couple commented on how cute the puppy was and fed it a small piece of beef, though why the teahouse allowed pet dining was not clear.

'And the woman, who was normal in every other respect, said to the dog: 'Say thank you to auntie, la ... Oh you naughty, naughty boy, you won't say thank you',' the reader wrote.

'I wasn't sure whether it was just normal behaviour in this part of town, or I should call the government's mental health services for help.'
