Football fiasco

In two recent football matches, the average number of people watching was less than 600, even though one of the matches featured South China, a very popular team.

At overseas matches, the crowds are always much bigger.

Why is there such a difference? I think it is because of a difference in culture. Hongkongers are always busy.

Adults work long hours, often doing overtime at weekends. They also need to spend time with their parents and families.

Teenagers and children are forced to spend a lot of time studying or with their families.

Not many people have time to go to watch football.

It's a shame that more people don't support local football. They are only interested when famous international stars come to play.

Too much food can kill

Parents love their children. They want them to be happy, so give them what they want. This is often the reason children start bad habits, such as unhealthy eating.

Childhood obesity is on the rise all over the world, including in Hong Kong. Because of the Chinese belief that eating a lot brings good fortune, Hong Kong parents offer lots of food to their children. Hong Kong children always have access to lots of snacks.

Most snacks contain a lot of fat and sugar and no nutrients. As a result, children who eat a lot of snacks could suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes and other diseases.

Not only can overeating affect children's outward appearance, it can also affect their confidence because of what they look like.

In my opinion, if parents want their children to be healthy, they should offer them healthy snacks such as vegetables and fruits.

Last but not least, parents should set a good example for their children. This will encourage their children to lead a healthy life.

Happiness is not about perfection

Everyone wants a good life. I always wanted my life to be colourful, exciting, funny and unforgettable. But now I am 16 and I don't think my life has been as wonderful as I wanted it to be.

I have some disappointing memories. I ask myself 'What's my future going to be like? How can I forget my disappointments?'. I used to think I'd never have good memories.

But now I realise the importance of bad experiences. They teach us lessons. I know now that I am growing up and becoming more mature as I pass through all these difficulties.

I enjoy my life even though it is not perfect.

I love myself even though I need to improve myself.

Problems pass as time goes by. If we are not afraid of making mistakes and we trust ourselves, we can be happy all the time.

Parenthood is a beautiful thing

It is traditional to have children after getting married. However, more and more young couples are choosing not to have children.

This phenomenon can be explained in several ways.

Quite a huge proportion of Hong Kong women are well educated. It is common for married women to continue working to support their families.

It is not easy to strike a balance between their jobs and their families. Therefore, they would rather concentrate on work than have a baby early.

After getting married, couples want to enjoy their relationship without a crying baby.

Some may not have the financial ability to support a child.

Others may just not want the responsibility for another life.

If you want a child, you have to look after them well and educate them. I think creating a new life is a great thing, but it's a huge responsibility. We should not take it lightly.

China product safety

There have been several incidents in the United States recently involving sub-standard Chinese exports.

Although the Chinese government say that there is no problem with the majority of products exported overseas, this does not seem to be true - we've even had problems with Chinese products in Hong Kong.

If the Chinese government continues to ignore the problems, it will lose out financially.

The Chinese government should stop unlawful businessmen from using toxic ingredients or making sub-standard products.

It also needs to forge closer ties with foreign governments to protect China's image overseas.

Listen to music, learn new vocab

I am very excited about the Linkin Park concert in November. I have loved Linkin Park since I was in Form Three and they are my favourite band.

When I heard they were playing in Hong Kong, I almost went crazy!

They are the first foreign band I really loved. Listening to their music made me realise how useful listening to English songs can be.

Listening to English songs is good for us because we can learn a lot of vocabulary from the lyrics.

I like reading the lyrics and singing along. When I find words in the lyrics that I don't know, I check the meaning in a dictionary.

These days, I learn most of my new vocabulary from songs.
