Allocating departments to their appropriate sector within an office will ensure a company runs smoothly. The managing director should be in the power position, which is generally the area diagonally opposite the main entrance. It is preferable for him/her to be in a separate room, otherwise their ability to delegate and manage may be compromised.

The sales and marketing department should be situated close to the entrance. As there is considerable activity and interaction between members of this department, an open-plan arrangement is acceptable. The accounts and human resources departments should be away from the entrance and not easily visible to visitors. Ensure they are not adjacent to toilets, otherwise the wealth of the company might be flushed away.

Fung shui masters who practise the Flying Stars method locate departments according to the orientation and age of a property. Departments with considerable activity, such as sales, are placed in yang areas, where there are positive water stars, which stimulate wealth. The managing director and the human resources department are placed in yin sectors, where there are calming mountain stars, which help them focus.
