Families offered free trip over city on Cathay's new aircraft

Tung Chung families who have never flown can sign up for the chance to enjoy a two-hour free trip over Hong Kong on a new Boeing aircraft this month.

The special ride coincides with a major expansion of Cathay Pacific Airway's fleet.

A spokeswoman for Cathay Pacific said Tung Chung families who had never flown were invited to join the flying tour on October 14. She said the airline had worked with several community organisations and the Islands District Office which would promote the 'community flight' and give out information.

The flight will carry a maximum of 150 passengers, with each family able to bring up to four members. Cathay said it was working with community groups to pick the travellers, but it has not released details.

The two-hour flight around the city will depart at midday and lunch will be served. All the Tung Chung passengers will fly economy class.

Although the plane will only fly around Hong Kong, all passengers will have to go through immigration.

Exact times and routes would be announced later, a Cathay spokeswoman said.

Cathay Pacific Airways will launch the first of 23 new Boeing 777-300ER aircraft tomorrow. It goes into service as the CX418 to Seoul and will fly regionally for a month before going onto long-haul routes, including an additional daily non-stop flight to New York from November 15.

The new aircraft arrived at Hong Kong International Airport on Friday night.

The plane can hold 258 passengers in economy, 57 in business and six in first class.

Islands District Council vice-chairwoman Chau Chuen-heung said the community flight would encourage more Tung Chung residents to participate in neighbourhood events.

Highlights of the new aircraft include luxurious suites in first class, flat business-class beds and economy seats that recline within a fixed shell to improve passenger space and comfort. Inflight entertainment includes around 50 movies, more than 100 television shows, more than 160 CDs, 22 radio channels and up to 96 games.
