Global Sources is launching its first Electronics Design Awards this year to identify the most exciting Asian electronics designs ranging from mobile phones, MP4 players to GPS and LCD televisions. The awards aim to encourage designs that transform people's lives.

Global Sources' electronic business unit president Mark Saunderson said Asian manufacturers design many of the most advanced products that define our modern lifestyles. 'Japan, Taiwan, [South] Korea, and now mainland China are at the forefront of the digital revolution. They are transforming science fiction into reality,' he said. The high number and quality of submissions they received pointed to the ongoing innovation and vitality in Greater China and Asia's electronics industry, he said.

An independent panel of judges made up of industry analysts, academics and procurement specialists evaluated the 211 entries according to their technical design, features and functionality, visual appeal and sales, marketing and export success.

Forty finalists in eight different categories - home entertainment, personal electronics, in-car electronics, wireless communication and networking products, computer products, power supplies, optoelectronics and security products - were announced last month.

'Our expert judges have significant technological expertise and in-depth knowledge of what qualities volume buyers are looking for,' said Mr Saunderson. 'These finalists represent the creative and unique applications of the emerging technologies. They possess a good balance between technology and marketability.'

The winners will be announced on Thursday and they will be showcased at the New Product Gallery of the China Sourcing Fair: Electronics & Components from this Friday to next Monday.
