Challenge your body and mind

The adventure race will last for 36 hours

Another adventure-based programme - Team Challenge 36 - is calling for applications.

Organised by The Boys' & Girls' Clubs Association of Hong Kong (BGCA), the race requires participants to complete a series of physical and mental activities within 36 hours. They include orienteering, abseiling, swimming, rafting and cycling.

For those who are not yet ready for the big challenge, there is a Novice event which should take only eight hours.

This year, the organisers have introduced a new category - the Super Challenge - for participants who are experienced hikers.

'One of the challenges is physical strength and endurance,' said Tony Yin Sze-ho, 19, a participant in previous events. 'With all the cycling, kayaking and hiking, it can get really tiring towards the end of the day. You will need to drink lots of water and take in energy food.'

Unlike other adventure competitions which have separate categories for men and women, Team Challenge 36 requires participants to form teams of five members with at least one from the opposite sex.

'It can get quite tricky when you have five people in a team. Conflicts can erupt easily when you are tired and confused,' Yin said. 'It requires strong team spirit to make it to the end.

'I would recommend that teams take part in the test run and training sessions provided by the organisers.

'Then you would know what it would be like and get to hone your skills and build up team spirit before the actual race.'

Maps, life jackets and bicycles would be provided by the organiser, but participants should bring in their own compasses and helmets. Funds raised from the event will be used to boost BGCA's youth services.

Team Challenge 36 will be held on December 29 and 30. The venue and course details will be announced five days before the race. The deadline for applications is October 31.
