HKUST professor's breakthrough

links mobiles to home computersHong Kong University of Science and Technology has discovered a way to turn an ordinary mobile phone into a mobile media centre. The technology enables phones to access images and video from a home computer, said Oscar Au Kin-chung, a professor of electronic and computer engineering.

PolyU dishes out 139 scholarships

Polytechnic University has awarded scholarships to 139 first-year, first-degree students, 29 of whom achieved outstanding exam results. The scholarships waive tuition fees and provide a living allowance per year ranging from HK$30,000 to HK$110,000.

Indian culture and religion professorshipChinese University has established a new professorship in Indian religions and culture, believed to be the first of its kind in Hong Kong. The position is the result of a HK$4 million donation from the International Society for Krishna Consciousness of Hong Kong. It has been awarded to Professor Kenneth Valpey from Oxford University, who will run four new courses, ranging from traditional religion to modern India.

HKU finds green solution in tunnels

The University of Hong Kong has signed an agreement with the Water Supplies Department to excavate tunnels for the storage of saltwater for the university's centennial campus. The tunnels will form a subterranean reservoir, a green solution to prevent loss of tree cover with the construction of the new campus.

Five to receive honorary degrees

Baptist University is conferring honorary degrees on five people for outstanding achievements and valuable contributions to society. Author Chen Yingzhen will be conferred a doctor of letters. Community builder Moses Cheng Mo-chi will be made doctor of laws, filmmaker Hou Hsiao-hsien will be conferred doctor of letters, Professor Shen Yuen-ron, a pioneer in non-linear optics will become doctor of science, and Professor Yang Tianle, a pioneer of anti-doping in the mainland, will be a doctor of social sciences.
