A businessman was jailed for six months yesterday for attacking two Japanese men with a champagne glass in a bar.
Alan Chan Hung-yip, 28, fiance of socialite Michelle Cheng Sze-wan, was sentenced by Eastern eCourt Magistrate Joseph To Ho-shing, who said using a glass as a weapon in a bar made jail inevitable.
Chan had denied assaulting Japanese model and actor Takuya Suzuki and his model friend Joe Nakamura.
But Mr Ho described Chan as 'arrogant and impatient' and said the evidence given by him and Ms Cheng was 'not honest or reliable'.
The magistrate denied Chan bail pending appeal but he was later released on HK$20,000 bail after an application to High Court judge Mr Justice John Saunders at his residence.
Suzuki suffered an injury to his left eye and Nakamura, ex-boyfriend of Chan's ex-wife, suffered cuts to his right hand in the attack in Volar bar in Lan Kwai Fong early on May 19.
In mitigation, senior counsel Cheng Huan said Chan was of good character and family background. The blows were 'unpremeditated' and his client acted 'on the spur of the moment', which differentiated the case from a typical assault.
