How come Henderson Land chairman and 'God of Stocks' Lee Shau-kee (pictured) has been getting almost uniformly worshipful coverage in the press? Even rival tycoon 'Superman' Li Ka-shing, once the universal darling of the media, gets the occasional piece of bad press these days. Is it just because of Mr Lee's personal charm?

Mr Lee's recent 80-day birthday party for his granddaughter Leanna offers a unique insight into this phenomenon. The party at the Four Seasons Hotel reportedly cost HK$60 million, including a Ferrari and millions of dollars in jewellery for daughter-in-law, mother and former model Cathy Chui Chi-kei.

A press area was set aside, but it was not the usual humiliating street corner surrounded by security guards. It was in the hotel lobby with a sumptuous buffet, surrounded by attentive waiters offering sushi and sashimi, roasted suckling pig and a HK$500 takeaway dinner pack with abalone pies, Hainan chicken and goose liver. Well, there is the secret of Mr Lee's media success. I almost regret my boss didn't send me to cover it.
