The Development Bureau plans to spend HK$1.4 billion on a 3.7km drainage tunnel in Sham Shui Po to replace an ageing system. The tunnel would run from Chak On Estate to Victoria Harbour near Stonecutters Island and alleviate frequent flooding in Sham Shui Po, Cheung Sha Wan and Lai Chi Kok. Work is planned to start early next year and finish early in 2012.

Tests find tea safe

The Centre for Food Safety found no chloroxylenol, an antiseptic ingredient, in bottled Tao Ti Oolong Tea samples, it confirmed yesterday. A nine-year-old boy fell ill last week after drinking a bottle of the tea from a ParknShop in Tseung Kwan O that was later found to contain the chemical.

Six burned in canteen

Two Lingnan University graduates and four of their relatives suffered burns to their feet when hot water splashed onto them at the university's canteen in Tuen Mun.

Minibus, taxi crash injures 8

Eight people, including five boys, were injured when a minibus and taxi crashed at the junction of Fung Kat Heung Road and Castle Peak Road in Yuen Long at 12.30pm. The minibus hit a tree after the collision. The drivers and six bus passengers were injured and taken to Tuen Mun Hospital. Three males aged 11, 41 and 51 were in stable condition.

Crackdown on motorists

Police issued 155 fixed penalty tickets, 180 summonses and 257 verbal warnings to motorists and pedestrians for traffic violations during Regional Traffic Day in Kowloon East on Monday.

20 held in gambling raid

Police arrested 20 people and seized HK$13,000 in cash when they raided a flat used as a gambling den in Yuen Long Pau Cheung Square in Yuen Long at 1am. The 10 men and 10 women were found playing mahjong in the flat. The detainees, aged between 25 and 62, were being held for questioning.
