The sun is shining again in Shanghai after the city was shrouded in a corruption scandal last year, with its economy recording robust growth this year, senior officials said yesterday.

Shanghai's disciplinary chief Shen Deyong described the billion-yuan pension fund scandal, which saw the removal of the city's party chief Chen Liangyu and prompted concerns over Shanghai's future development, as a 'dark cloud'.

'I can tell everyone responsibly that it is normal to see occasional dark clouds in Shanghai's sky,' he said on the sidelines of the party congress. 'But the sun will ultimately disperse the clouds, and the sky in Shanghai will be clear forever.'

Mr Shen was installed by Beijing as the city's anti-graft chief following the corruption case.

He said the case, the country's biggest corruption scandal in a decade, had had negative impacts on the city, but Beijing's handling of it had yielded positive results.

'It has been settled in a timely, effective and thorough way under the leadership of the party's Central Committee and Shanghai Municipal Committee,' he said.
