ICAC man's family firm furnished safe houses

Australia

A 'mission impossible' jeopardised the career of an anti-graft agent when he was assigned to furnish safe houses cheaply and quickly, Eastern Court heard yesterday. Chan Ching-hiu, 33, used furniture from his family-run store and tried to hide the conflict of interest by stealing and replacing receipts amounting to HK$19,510, dated July and August last year. The former Independent Commission Against Corruption assistant investigator made no financial gain for himself 'apart from getting the jobs done for the ICAC quickly and cheaply', the court heard in mitigation. The case was adjourned to October 31 for sentencing.
