What drives it? A front-wheel-drive 1,497cc, 109 brake-horsepower 16-valve VVT-i engine with a four-speed, electronic automatic transmission, electronic fuel injection, rack and pinion power steering with a minimum turn radius of 5.3 metres, new suspension and ventilated disc brakes on 16-inch wheels.

How fast is it? The dealer says the Corolla can hit 175km/h, but claims to have no data on the car's 0-100km/h acceleration.

How safe is it? Built for export to the west, the deluxe car has eight airbags, an anti-lock braking system with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution, three-point seat belts with pre-tensioners and force limiters, an adjustable front seat belt anchor, Isofix child restraints, rear doors with safety locks and an immobiliser.

How thirsty is it? It drinks 7.3 litres per 100km on a combined run.

Hong Kong friendly? The 1.5-litre Corolla spews 172 grams of CO2 per km, just above the fug equivalent of 1.3 Smart ForTwos.

Available: The deluxe model costs HK$169,830. The basic version is HK$149,850 on 15-inch wheels at Crown Motors (tel: 2866 1020).
