Disc jockey denies defrauding RTHK

An RTHK disc jockey yesterday denied stealing HK$18,900 from the broadcaster by making bogus claims for scriptwriting and research fees.

Vera Lee, 35, who broadcasts as La La Lam, pleaded not guilty in Kowloon City Court to six charges of theft and money-laundering and was released on HK$10,000 bail to appear again in the same court on November 12.

Lee is accused of falsely claiming fees from the government broadcaster on three occasions between May and August 2001 and laundering the proceeds through a third-party bank account.

RTHK programme host and producer Chan King-chong appeared in Kowloon City Court facing similar, separate charges, but was not required to enter a plea.

His case, involving a total of 12 charges, was transferred to the District Court.

Chan will be required to enter pleas to the charges on November 9.

Chan, 40, is accused of falsely representing in 10 payment claims submitted between February 2001 and January 2002 that his mother, Wong Yuk-fong, had provided scriptwriting services to the broadcaster.

He also is alleged to have conspired with Liu Sin-yi and Pang Ka-man to defraud their employer by fraudulently claiming Chan's mother and Pang's mother had provided artist services between October 2000 an February 2002.
