Environment is the real winner

Recipients and judges of the 2007 AustCham CLP Sustainable Development (SustDev) Award offer their thoughts on this hot topic.

Will Turbet, marketing communications director of Aconex

'The very nature of our production is intertwined with 'sustainable development'. Construction companies waste vast amounts of paper. We help by offering them a way to manage projects by storing documents electronically in our system. The net result: we cut down on paper usage immensely and help those that travel view their projects wherever they may be online.'

Noel Lyons, executive director-international of Box Hill Institute of TAFE

'Many of our projects are about sustainable development. To us it is about people building their capacity to be productive in their respective social, environmental and economic systems. The concept of sustainable development must be broad - it must be forward thinking and not primarily for the business that is doing it but more for the community.'

Steve Martin, judge and CEO of Shanghai Ying Jie International

'Aconex saves a huge amount of resources and hugely contributes to document management efficiency. The engineering world can print out unbelievable amounts of paper - Aconex helps the environment and companies' bottom lines. Boxhill has a sustainable business model through imagination and its flair for bending to its clients' needs by offering - and tailoring - its courses throughout Asia. They both deserve to win the SustDev Award because the former has a sustainable development programme and the latter has a sustainable business model which they use for the benefit of Asia.'

Kim Murphy, judge and managing director of the Wine Institute of Asia

'Aconex falls under the pillar of environmental sustainable development. It saves an enormous amount of paper, manpower and other resources. On one job alone the firm saved more than 1 million documents, the space it takes to store these and the manpower to manage it. Box Hill demonstrated a strong commitment to the success of its students beyond education. We felt it fulfilled the criteria for the social pillar of sustainable development. It is constantly looking at markets, developing courses to fulfil local needs and is proud of its students success in finding full employment.'
