Overseas drug mules poured into Guangzhou during the National Day holiday, with one Nigerian courier found in possession of a record 1.91kg of heroin, the city's customs authority said.

Customs said it handled 14 illicit drug cases and arrested 15 suspects between September 25 and October 9. Nine cases involved drug mules swallowing heroin-filled capsules while the others involved people hiding drugs in their belongings.

The authority said one Afghan drug mule refused to eat and 'evacuate' drug capsules for 19 days even after a CT scan confirmed he had a large number of foreign objects in his body, potentially threatening his life.

'It can be deadly for the couriers to have heroin capsules in their bodies for such a long time,' a customs spokeswoman said.

Customs officials said demand for drugs was always great during holidays. The Guangzhou authorities have admitted that the city is an international distribution hub for illegal drugs due to its prosperous economy and convenient traffic links.
