The Housing Department said there had been a drop in rent arrears owed by public housing tenants. In July, 3.4 per cent of rental revenue was overdue, down from 4.57 per cent in December 2005. The department attributed the drop in part to the introduction two years ago of electronic rent collection. E-payment cards issued to tenants allow them to pay rent at 800 7-Eleven stores and 50 MTR customer service centres. This year, rent paid via the department's shroff offices is down 40 per cent.
